Addressing the Black Maternal Health Crisis
Every maternal death creates a space where grief stands in the place that joy should be. Since 80% of these deaths are preventable, we've got lots of space to make a real impact.
What We Do:
We are working to connect with more midwives, doulas, healthcare providers, community organizations, and houses of worship to reach as many mothers as possible. Also, we're working to establish a birth center that offers comprehensive and culturally affirming care for Black women from adolescence through menopause.
Eighty percent of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. According to the CDC, "maternal deaths are considered preventable if reasonable changes to provider, facility, patient, community, or system factors could have helped to prevent the death." We only need to make small changes to have a big impact. We're working to raise awareness so there's no more unnecessary loss of life.
We produce, print, and distribute materials to educate and empower moms on prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum recovery. Most importantly, our educational materials teach moms the urgent maternal warning signs that can signal a life-threatening complication so they know to get emergency care when needed.
